1) Main valve
The first thing to do is make sure you have a properly functioning main valve to your home. The best kind is a solid brass single- lever ball valve. These are the most reliable.
2) Annual inspection
An annual inspection of your plumbing system is the best way to ensure potential issues don’t become serious issues.
3) Replace your water heater
Replacing your water heater every 8-10 years is a major preventative for potential disaster. The average size residential water heater is 40 gallons. That is a lot of water!
4) Washing machine hoses
Another major cause for concern is the rubber hoses that connect your washing machine to your water supply in the laundry room. These hoses will deteriorate from the inside out and rupture due to loss of elasticity. The way to prevent this is to replace these hoses with stainless steel washing machine hoses. These will not rust or deteriorate, ensuring peace of mind.
5) Water quality
Water quality is the main reason for most plumbing complications. The local municipal water contains minerals, contaminants, and chemicals that cause scale build-up and deteriorate the inner workings of toilets, faucets, appliances, and other plumbing fixtures. Whole house water filtration, conditioning, and purification are the only solutions to this issue.
